History & Mission

History

The European Robotics League (ERL) is a competition designed to benchmark robotic systems in realistic, real-world environments. ERL originated as an evolution of successful EU-funded projects, including RoCKIn, euRathlon, and EuRoC, developed under the SPARC partnership. These initiatives laid the groundwork for a unified approach to robot competitions across industrial, service, and emergency robotics.

The league officially launched at RoboCup 2016 in Leipzig, Germany, and has since grown into a structured ecosystem of local and major tournaments supported by Horizon 2020. Based primarily in Europe and open to international participation, ERL competitions address challenges in smart urban environments and related domains.

Mission

ERL’s mission is to advance robotics through fair, transparent benchmarking, promoting autonomy, safety, robustness, and ethical responsibility. By bringing together researchers, industry, and the public, the European Robotics League supports innovation and the responsible deployment of robotics technologies.

Beyond competition, ERL plays an important educational role by supporting the development of future engineers and scientists. By engaging students and young researchers in applied robotics challenges, the European Robotics League promotes innovation, technical excellence, and the attraction and development of future talent for the responsible integration of robotics technologies in society.
